2009 is shaping up to be a good year for tourism in Penticton, BC, inspite of the recession. These statistics from the Visitor Centre show an increased interest in visiting Penticton.
Last year Penticton had an increase in visitors over 2007 (while most other destinations in BC were either the same or recorded a decrease) and it looks like that will be up again this year.
We attribute these results to two factors. First, Over the past four years Penticton has been conducting a destination marketing program. It looks like their efforts are right on target. Last year the high price of gas encouraged people to look for vacation opportunities that were within an affordable driving distance. Penticton fits that goal perfectly for people in the major markets of the Lower Mainland, Calgary and to some extent, Edmonton. It is difficult to find a better combination of weather and attractions (two very good beaches, wineries to tour, etc.) within a reasonable drive. This helped make many people aware of Penticton and what it has to offer.
This year, with a recession in full swing, rather than abandon a vacation, travellers are looking for affordable options. Again, Penticton heads the list and the increased awareness from last year, plus the results of the marketing campaign have produced a lot of interest in Penticton.
