Marketing hotels and motels during this recession

By now it should be clear to all business owners and managers that the world didn’t end last fall and that there are, in fact, very good opportunities emerging.

If you are a small hotel or motel owner and take what you hear in the media at face value, you would probably have just closed your doors, because according to them the travel business was in deep trouble.

On the other hand, those who sniffed out the opportunities and marketed to them are seeing more business this year than last.

We came across a good article recently which we’d like to share with you: “Online hotel marketing tips for a recession” by Mark Forrester, founder and Managing Director of Occupancy Marketing. Forrester focuses on Internet marketing of U.K. accommodation properties but his remarks, taken in context, apply equally well to small Okanagan motels, hotels and bed & breakfasts.

As we stated in a previous article, the current picture in Penticton looks remarkably good. Penticton’s destination marketing has done a good job of reaching potential travellers. Now it is up to the small operators to bring that business into their properties rather than let the the bigger operations take the cream while the rest eventually filters down to the others. The web offers small operators a great chance to show potential guests why they should stay at their motel or RV park or campground.
